Workshops are the heart of the conference, providing professional development opportunities for youth and adults alike. The Showcase highlights high-quality projects from across the country, and is an opportunity to connect with people and share how a project was implemented, how it was connected to curricular goals, and what made it effective.

About the Showcase

Do you have a high-quality project you would like to highlight at the conference? Not ready for a full 60-minute workshop session but have a powerful message to deliver? Then consider being part of the showcase.

Showcase Hours



Set-Up: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Display Hours: 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Display Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Staffed Hours: 12:45 p.m. – 1:45 p.m.

Projects will be set up as table top displays on a 6-foot table. Participants are encouraged to staff their table during the staff hours listed. Neither electricity hook ups nor internet connections are available in the showcase. Presenters may apply for both a workshop and a showcase. All presenters are expected to register for the conference.

Strong project proposals should show ties to curriculum, and include reflection components, youth voice, and community partnerships. The proposal should effectively describe the impact the program has on its community and how the initiative is unique and replicable for conference attendees.

Call for Proposals

Proposals will be assessed on content quality, creativity of delivery, and audience participation. We strongly encourage proposals from young people. Workshops that involve audience interaction are also strongly encouraged. Presenters may apply for both a workshop and a Showcase.

  1. Proposals must be submitted online at the link provided above.
  2. When filling out the online workshop proposal form, you will be asked to submit your narrative description via text boxes, describing all important aspects of your presentation, including:
    1. Overview of presentation content
    2. Learning objectives gained by participants
    3. Learning and teaching methods used in the workshop
    4. Opportunities for participant interaction and reflection
    5. Description of the primary presenter’s qualifications and experiences (an optional paragraph may be included for each of the co-presenters)
  3. Only complete applications will be reviewed.
  4. NYLC reserves the right to edit titles and descriptions for length and content for the official conference program.
  5. Academic degrees will not be included in the program guide.
  6. All communications will be sent only to the primary presenter.
  7. All presenters must register for the conference.
  8. If accepted, presentation content cannot be changed from original proposal without written approval from the conference and events coordinator.
  9. All presentations will be uploaded to the 2017 Conference Group on the Generator School Network (GSN).

Workshop Formats

Because conference participants are of diverse ages and come from diverse backgrounds, we offer a variety of flexible formats for sharing your best work and to help attendees gain the benefit of a wide range of presentation styles.

Engaged Learning

These 60-minute sessions are designed to give you more time to explore a topic in-depth using a variety of techniques. Engage your audience in hands-on activities, simulations, facilitated panels, small group work, World Café-style conversations, or other active learning methods.

In an effort to be more inclusive and sensitive to individual learning needs, you are asked to present in one of three distinct learning formats. They are: 

Lecture (listen and learn) – Designed for those who absorb information by listening to a speaker deliver a lecture. These sessions contain a low level of interactivity.

Interactive (learn from experts and practice) – These sessions feature hands-on learning with facilitated guidance through listening, moving, touching, doing, and discussing, and are designed to provide a medium level of interaction.

Peer-to-Peer (learn from each other) – These are participant-led sessions with the highest level of interactivity. These sessions are designed for participants to learn from peers through discussions and sharing of experiences. The facilitator drives the process, but not the content.
